Painting of Penguins : Beginning of Another Adventure

Penguins head out to the ocean each morning while it’s still dark―a new adventure begins today . I developed this concept from a request :a client asked me to paint penguins. That client, my dear friend Brent, is also an artist and runs a studio on Harbour Street in Oamaru, New Zealand. Remarkably, little blue penguins live beneath his studio. I imagined them emerging from their nest under his floorboards and heading out to the sea, and I chose to capture that moment in my painting.

In fact, penguins leave their nests before sunrise to head out to the sea, and I realized this would be the perfect opportunity to paint the sky purple―Brent’s favorite colour! Around the same time, I went stargazing near a penguin nesting site, and the stars and penguins I observed inspired me even further.

Brent had mentioned that he was about to close his studio―where he’d worked for the last five years―to embark on a new chapter in life. With his situation in mind, titling the painting “Beginning of Another Adventure” felt perfectly fitting.

毎朝辺りがまだ暗いうちに、ペンギン達は海に向かってゆく。今日もまた新たな冒険が始まる―。

ペンギンの絵を描いてほしい、という依頼からイメージを膨らませてこの絵を描きました。

絵の依頼人であり、良き友人でもあるBrentはニュージーランド、オアマルのハーバーストリートにスタジオ（店）を持っており（Brentもアーティスト）、彼のスタジオの床下にはOamaru名物のリトル・ブルー・ペンギンが住み着いています。そこから海に出かけて行くペンギン達を想像し、彼らが家を出る姿を描くことにしました。実際にペンギンは朝暗いうちに陸上の巣から海へ出かけて行くし、夜明けの空にBrentの好きな紫色が使えるのも良いと思いました。ちょうど絵の構想を練っていた頃、ペンギンの巣の近くで夜明け前に星空観察する機会があり、その時に見た星やペンギンもヒントになりました。
